Watchtower
A harbor view
Urban Watchtower by the Sea
Just at the tip of Copenhagen’s Nordhavn, the watchtower creates a viewing platform with a close conceptual link to the harbor’s historic function as a shipping port. The urban watchtower is created from several containers, stacked vertically and horizontally 8 meters tall. A staircase weaves its way through and around the exterior of the tower, leading to two small exhibition spaces halfway up and ending at a viewing platform at the very top of the tower. Large panoramic glass walls at the end of each white container open up the bright yellow interiors, tempting by-passers to venture up into the watchtower. From the top, visitors get a clear view across the water and the surrounding area, which is designed with small islets of greenery and trees, benches, and bicycle stands. The entire area is part of a recreational area running along a promenade, leading the way to the watchtower.
