Arena School

settings for community

An activity-based learning environment

Arena School and Leisure Ørestad Swimming Center is designed as a flexible, activity-based learning environment adaptable to different learning styles and student age groups. As students progress to higher grades, the building becomes more open, and the activity-based setup extends from a single room to the school’s communal areas. In the lower grades, rooms provide a safe and manageable framework with three zones: a gathering area, space for group work, and a quiet niche for focused activities. In the middle grades, activity-based rooms are introduced, while the upper grades feature activity-based learning environments with functional areas supporting dialogue, concentration, and group work.

Dynamic Common Areas

The common areas play a dynamic and central role in the school’s layout. In the early grades, these areas are used by both the school and the after-school program, with flexible furniture that can open and close like market stalls. The space can quickly transform into a marketplace with workshop zones and exhibition areas, fostering activity and engagement among students. Teachers and administrative staff have access to varied break and preparation areas that support both individual-focused work and collaboration.

User Involvement

The design of Arena School was shaped through a thorough needs assessment, where workshops with both the school and the municipality played a central role. These workshops identified preferences for learning styles, pedagogical visions, and desired behavior, ensuring the interior design could meet specific needs.

Harmony through Materials and Design

Materials and colors were carefully selected to create a harmonious connection between the building and the furniture. Wood is used as a recurring material, while subdued color tones provide a sense of calm that complements the building’s color palette. Durable surfaces and robust materials were prioritized to ensure resilience for daily use. The thoughtful design offers students, teachers, and administrative staff an inspiring environment that promotes well-being and learning.
